2007 Breckenridge Jen-Mar Cabernet Sauvignon

JV Wines and Spirits is very proud to announce a spectacular addition to our cellar collection. The 2007 Breckenridge Jen-Mar Cabernet Sauvignon has been added and it is a spectacular addition indeed. Produced by winemaker Bruce Devlin and grown by  wine manager Jim Barbour, this Cabernet Sauvignon is incredible both by itself or with a beautiful steak or game-style dinner. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on a one and a half-acre property on the Breckinridge’s personal estate JEN-MAR (named after a shortened version of their daughter’s names) which is located in the St. Helena appellation of the Napa Valley.  Only 200 cases have been produced and this wine has beautiful noses of dark fruits (plums and dark cherries) and has an elegance and smoothness that is unrivaled. Costing $64.99 per bottle, this is a diamond of a Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine does not last long, so come in and enjoy the 2007 Breckinridge Jen-Mar Cabernet Sauvignon. This will be a great addition to anyone’s cellar. Cheers!

2008 Y. Rosseau Cabernet Sauvignon “Le Roi Soleil”

Yannick Rosseau was born in the South-West corner of France known as Gascony. This region is known as the “French paradox” with daily wine consumption, delicious and rich foods and impressive longevity of the inhabitants. In 1996, Yannick made his first Colombard at Domaine St. Lannes. He also put in time at Chateau Montus and Domaine Boucasse. In 1998. Yannick earned a Master’s degree in Enology and Viticulture from University Paul Sabitier in Toulouse.

In 1999, Yannick came to the Napa Valley. First working at Newton Vineyards, then from 2001-2006 was applying his craft at Chateau Potelle. He returned in 2007-2008 to Chateau Potelle as a consulting winemaker.

In 2007, Yannick finally lived his dream to make his own wine and started building his wines from both the Russian River and especially his Mt. Veedar vineyards.

2008 Y. Rosseau Cabernet Sauvignon “Le Roi Soleil”

This is a wine with bright, black fruit. It holds a brilliant structure with chewy, yet refined tannins. Aged in French oak for 18 months, Yannick produced only 109 cases. The wine was grown on steep hills with volcanic soils. Having long sun exposure because of its location on “the mountain”, this is a wine that has a “wild” feel to it.

This wine has a tariff of $61.99 and is a very limited, allocated and special wine. It is located in our Wine Cellar and would be a great addition to any cellar. It would go great with beef or any seasoned white meats, such as lamb or pork. Please join us on a journey at JV and pay us a visit. When here, please ask assistance from any Wine Consultant- we are very happy to assist you!

2007 Lillian Syrah

Lillian Syrah is an extraordinary and rare wine. Winemaker Maggie Harrison is a full-time winemaker at Antica Terra, one of Oregon’s world-class Pinot Noir locations. Previously, working eight years as Manfred Krankel’s assistant at cult classic, Sine Qua Non, she has now come up with a beautiful (and soon to be legendary) California Syrah called Lillian.

2007 Lillian Syrah

Having the fruit sourced from the White Hawk Vineyard, in Santa Barbera County’s Los Alamos Hills, where pure sand soils and minuscule annual rainfall necessitate drip irrigation. This wine produces aromas of black raspberry, cola, incense and green olive. A very lush wine, with dark berry (such as blackberry) flavors, and a beautiful spiciness and with pastille qualities, there is also an undercurrent of minerality. Because of its size and beautiful smokiness, aeration would help even expand Lillian’s beauty.  A  rack of lamb or a crisp-skin roasted duck with raspberry Chambord sauce would be a perfect complement to this wine.

Just a few hundred cases were made and Lillian is now in high demand. The tariff for this wine is $76.99 and would be a beautiful compliment to any wine cellar. Come and experience 2007 Lillian before it is too late.

The Wines of Scott Tracy and Poem cellars

Scott Tracy is one of the top sommeliers in the Napa Valley and has opened a very special winery called Poem Cellars. The famous quote “…and the wine is bottled poetry” by Robert Louis Stevenson is his inspiration for these very special wines. Scott has had a 30 year career in the wine business and is proud to present these  wines to the public. JV Wines and Spirits is very honored have two of these very difficult wines to find in our Cellar Collection. The two wines we have in our collection are the 2008 Tastevin NV Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2008 Engaged NV Cabernet Sauvignon.

2008 Tastevin Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

This is a wine with dark, ripe fruit and compelling spice notes. With beautiful acidity and a very integrated feel to it, you will find black currants, plums, dried olive, orange peel and spicy black pepper on it. The palate will give off ripe plums, blackberry and baked cherry fruits. The wine is sourced from St. Helena vineyards with a blend of 85% Cabernet and 15% Cabernet Franc.

2008 Engaged Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine is a full-bodied wine that has lush fruit with beautiful acidity. Having a good structure, the nose comes up with sweet lush red fruits, cherries and dark red fruits with dried aromas of cinnamon and fresh floral noses with a touch of green or pink peppercorns. The palate holds Cassis, blueberries, dark cherries, raspberries, mocha noses, pepper and the christmas spices of clove and nutmeg.  This wine is sourced in St. Helena and is a blend of 95% Cabernet and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The Tastevin is $39.99 per bottle and the Engaged is $69.99 per bottle.

Valentines is here… Have you got your wine yet?

If not, you better get a bottle. If you do nothing else, you better have something to share with your special someone. Flowers and chocolate are nice. Dinner out with a bottle of your favorite is better.
But even if you share a nice home cooked meal, you need something that both of you will appreciate. Right now we have some great deals on Champagnes and new French wines that speak of the Romance that is Valentines. Of course you don’t need to wait until Valentines to treat your date.
Today, the weather is perfect for a picnic. Pickup a bottle of Rose or sparkling and some sandwiches and hit the trail. Plenty of spots to stop, eat and sip to perfection.
I will post some of my pics in this posting soon.

Enjoy the day!

2009 Donnhoff Riesling

On February 10, 2011, JV Wines and Spirits will host a German and Austrian Wine Tasting hosted at the JV Wines and Spirits Tasting Bar at 7:15PM. We will be tasting beautiful German Rieslings along with an Austrian Gruner Veltliner. I will discuss a Riesling today that we have at JV and will be similar to ones we will try this Thursday.

The 2009 Donnhoff Riesling is a wine with beautiful aromatics. It has a straw color with a bright visual approach to it. The wine has a medium texture to the nose, along with apples, pears, stone and light earthiness and finishes with a touch of white pepper. It has a beautiful mouthfeel to it and has a clean and refreshing finish to it.

This Riesling comes from the region of Nahe, an area in Southern Germany that has many different soil types. This wine is not classified and is priced at $23.99 per bottle. We are presently low on volume of this wine, but more will be coming in the near future. This is a classic Riesling from Germany that is a pleasure to drink.

Please join us for our German and Austrian Wine tasting. Contact Jon Finley (jonf@jvwine.com). Next, I will review a beautiful Gruner Veltliner from Austria. More to follow………

Mercury Head has arrived… and its Fleeting already!

Orin Swift has a nack for creating a very desirable and yet, sometimes hard to get wine that is cult-like without the price. Of all the varietals that he has created, perhaps the most allocated is his 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Mercury Head from Napa Valley.
The 2008 has just been released and there is bust sparse few bottles to go around. We here at JV only received 4 6-pack cases.
If you want to get your hands on one be prepared to get in line, even at $84.99 a bottle they will go very fast. This years vintage breaks in at 15.5% alcohol.

Mercury Head is the slang term for the authentic Liberty Dime which serves as the wine’s “front label”. As a kid Dave Phinney collected these dimes. Years later, after getting one with some change, he was reminded how striking they are.

2008 Mercury Head marks the eighth vintage of we consider to be our best Cabernet Sauvignon lots. This vintage was all about low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Small berries and smaller clusters got super ripe while retaining bright acidity and mature tannins. Our aim is to have subtle oak nuances that won’t dominate the fruit, only accent the aroma. You could open one tonight or age it for up to 10 years.

Tasting Notes
The aroma is of dark chocolate and toasty caramelized oak. There is also a hint of seasoned cedar and rose petals. A big entry leads into a soft mid-palate with bright acidity and mouth coating weight. Flavors of ripe black currant and semi-sweet cherries exit into a long finish with strong well integrated tannins.
